Tlell’s Quilt, 1979

Five women made log cabin blocks for Tlell's Quilt.

Lorrie, Linda, and three other friends made log cabin squares for baby Tlell’s quilt in 1979. “Nobody we know has ever had a baby before. This is a special event and we want to recognize it.” Linda declared. The women asked my advice because they had never quilted before and the squares were of slightly different sizes, and rather crooked. I told them not to worry, to just trim the bigger squares or add a little extra to the smaller ones. One of the women recalls, “We slapped it together and it looked just fine, a little miracle.”

Thank-you letter from Tlell’s mom:

“The quilt is absolutely beautiful. I am feeling quite a bit of nostalgia. All kinds of memories are drifting through my mind. Tlell picked up on the excitement when we got the box at the post office and wheeled home through the pouring rain. I cried when I saw what it was. I can’t stop staring at it! Tlell has thoroughly checked it out, having crawled to all four corners, then gotten up and walked around it in circles a few times, smiling and looking at the colours. Then she sat down, looking pretty smug. Thanks a lot for the beautiful quilt.”
